Very pleasing result and performance that. Could and should have had a few more. Always nice to turn the 'Twitter' mob over. That said, I thought they were the poorest Stamford side Ive seen in a few years. Their Captain, number 8, played very well and drove their attacks but not many real chances.
Well done boys

Southern League Premier Central – Tuesday, 14th January 2025

Halesowen Town 2 Stamford AFC 0

Halesowen returned to winning ways with a solid 2-0 win over play-off chasing Stamford, writes David Johnson. The victory leaves Halesowen just two points off the top of the table.

Yeltz manager Russ Penn was clearly pleased with the evening’s work and thought “we were excellent from start to finish. I thought we were so well organised and disciplined. It’s been a tough month, but we stopped the rot. We always looked threatening on the break, hopefully this is a turning point for us now.”

Kieren Donnelly was put through as early as the 2nd minute but opted to take the ball around goalkeeper Thomas Jackson and his chance slipped away. Home goalkeeper Dan Platt then raced well out of his area to clear in the 9th minute before Halesowen’s Conor Tee whipped over dangerous 14th minute cross.

Stamford went close when their captain Robert Morgan lashed wide after 17 minutes and both Tendai Chiotiza and Tobias Liversidge saw 21st minute efforts blocked. In even exchanges, Milan Butterfield nodded down on his debut for Josh Smile’s shot to be turned away for a 25th minute corner to Halesowen.

The Daniels had won their last three away games under long-serving manager Graham Drury whilst the Yeltz were looking to end three consecutive defeats and it was Halesowen who took a half-time lead after Tee’s dipping 25 yard free-kick was tipped over the bar by Jackson. From the resulting corner, Ryan Wynter helped the ball into the path of SMILE and he hit a sweet shot from the edge of the area into the top left of the net, well beyond the outstretched arms of Jackson, to notch his first ever Yeltz goal in the 33rd minute.

The Yeltz almost doubled the lead just two minutes later on the break when Ben Cassidy surged forwards and laid the ball off to Tee, only for Jackson to make a fine save. Just before the interval, Donnelly shrugged off three defenders to fire just wide and Halesowen then defended two Stamford corners before the half-time whistle.

Halesowen deservedly made it 2-0 in the 50th minute when TEE sent Jackson the wrong way and slotted home from the penalty spot after Cassidy’s sensational run forward from the half-way line was only stopped by a George Hobbins foul.

The Yeltz prevented Stamford from creating any clear chances in the second half and could’ve increased the lead with three late chances for substitute McKauley Manning. Manning scooped over the bar after being supplied by Donnelly on an 81st minute break and Manning then fired over the bar on the turn before his attempt to lob Jackson also fell wide in the first minute of added time. Luke Postle was introduced in the seventh minute of added time to enjoy twenty seconds of action.

Halesowen Town: Dan Platt; Jak Hickman, Reece Mitchell, Josh Smile, Ryan Wynter (c), Ryan Wollacott, Ben Cassidy (Luke Postle 90+7), Conor Tee, Kieren Donnelly, Milan Butterfield, Alex Cameron (McKauley Manning 73). Subs Not Used: Nat Kelly, Pa Nije, Lewis Solly.

Yeah it was pleasing. We controlled it from start to finish really. They came with their usual antics and aside from a couple of cautions we never took the bait. Defence looked solid and I can't recall Platty having a save to make. Controlled the midfield and any of the four of them could have been given MOTM. KD as always posed many problems for the defence even though he never got on the score sheet. Once again we have shown we're a good, capable side, now we just need the consistency. Well done lads!

The Stamford captain Rob Edwards played his last game for the club at the Grove, and has joined Harborough Town & scored on debut.
