'Only' 405, the subdued atmosphere and yellow socks

Post by RobYeltz » 16 Mar 2014, 09:46

For those of you that don't tweet or have access to twitter John Hill commented last night about the subdued atmosphere at The Grove yesterday. I think a crowd of only 405 was poor yesterday, especially with Albion playing away from home. Did last weeks seven goal thriller (albeit defeat) really put lots of people off going despite us since going back to the top?

I always try to be vocal, more so in encouraging the players from behind the dug out, I'm not one of the 'singers' who congregate behind the goal, superstition dictates this. I do try and be a 'singer' at away games though when we mostly congregate together.

John also commented later, that he is acknowledges we have the best support in the league, and the young players in his squad need us more than ever before in the run in. So, for the remaining few games, let's make that extra effort to be more supportive, get the flags out, bring some blue balloons or even wear some yellow socks. (Can't work that one out personally)

I always think it's a two way thing.

The first half was a bit flat so that translates to the crowd.

I know fans shouldn't need an excuse but IMO it helps when the game has an edge to it.

Also maybe a case of 'after the lord mayor's show' having hosted Leek and Belper in successive weeks.

Yellow socks also confuse me! Maybe they're lucky?

Ooo, me Sir, me Sir!
For once I have some inside info. The players have asked to keep using the yellow socks as it makes their teammates more visible and it's easier to pick out a pass to them.
Straight from the horse's mouth. Well, Colin's mouth.

Also, the lack of atmosphere was because of the Harrogate Music Festival.

And why, I hear you ask? Well, my son's brass band was playing, so I had to drive back to Yorkshire rather than take full advantage of the sponsor's bar, so I was sober, so I didn't lead off songs about Evran or Kevin Harrison.
Simples.

I think the problem is, being at the top, everyone is tense. Willing the team on with gritted teeth and chewed fingernails. I certainly can't look half the time!

When away the fans are normally more vocal, early in the ground a few drinks etc.
