Halesowen Town 1 Romulus 1 (Romulus win 4-3 on penalties)

Halesowen slumped out of the Integro League Cup at the first stage after a penalty shoot-out against rock-bottom Romulus from the lower league.

The hosts started the better in a first period of few chances as Jack Kelly’s 12th minute free-kick was fumbled away for a corner by goalkeeper Curtis Hall and John McAtee dragged a shot just wide three minutes later. Daniel Udoh’s 28th minute shot was then saved low down by Hall.

Romulus showed little invention up front in the first half but forced a 19th minute corner following a good run down the left from Charlie Walford and Troy Wallen shot weakly at home goalkeeper Dan Platt three minutes later.

The Yeltz took the lead on the half-hour when McATEE broke down the left and although his first attempt was blocked, the rebound fell kindly for him to slot past Hall. Before the interval Walford cleared Kyle Morrison’s header off the Romulus line and Hall made a good blocking save to deny Udoh with the home side seeming to have the upper hand.

At the start of the second half, Morrison nodded Kelly’s corner just wide. But Romulus looked a different side after the break and started to threaten as a 30-yard free-kick from Louis Harris drifted wide before a couple of good crosses just escaped a final touch in the home penalty area.

The visitors levelled after 64 minutes when Louis Harris’s long range effort was only parried by goalkeeper Platt and Harry HARRIS converted the rebound from the left of the penalty area. Romulus went close again with a speculative 45-yard shot from Harry Harris before a 72nd minute corner flashed across goal. The Yeltz were unable to get going again, although substitute Yasin Al-Massry was blocked on the line from Kelly’s injury time corner.

The tie went directly to a penalty shoot-out and the first spot-kick from each side was saved with Hall saving from Kelly and Platt keeping out Malachi Farquharson. Oliver Finney, Jordan Goddard and McAtee converted the second, third and fourth penalties for Halesowen, only to be matched by penalty successes from Barry Fitzharris, Charlie Walford and Kyle Rowley for Romulus. Late substitute Asa Charlton then put Halesowen’s fifth and final penalty wide, allowing Romulus to win the game 4-3 on penalties as Louis Harris smashed into the top corner beyond Platt.

Halesowen Town: Dan Platt; Enock Luc Ekongo, Jack Kelly, Marcus Poscha, Kyle Morrison (c), Bradley Lewis (Asa Charlton 84), Roland Agbor (Yasin Al-Massry 67), Jordan Goddard, Daniel Udoh (Samuel Dallow HT), John McAtee, Oliver Finney. Subs Not Used: John Hill, Jordon Gerorge Richards.
