The winning goal was tremendous. I thought we deserved the win overall despite periods of huffing and puffing.

I felt Ponticelli was trying a bit too hard at times and made wayward efforts when other options were available; but then he made up for it with a good finish.

Southern League Premier Central – Saturday, 2nd November 2024

Halesowen Town 2 Spalding United 1

Impressive Halesowen struck two stunning late goals to light up the atmosphere at the Grove, writes DJ.

Yeltz manager Russ Penn was delighted. “It’s the best performance since I’ve been here. How we were 1-0 down for 75 minutes, I don’t know. We looked fit and worked hard. It was a joy to watch today.”

Improving Spalding’s return to Grove first time since 2023 play-off final ended in the same added-time manner as the Yeltz came from behind to win 2-1

In early play, Khanya Leshabela’s 2nd minute cross along the Yeltz goal just evaded Connor Tomlinson.

Halesowen then squandered a great chance to take a 10th minute lead when McKauley Manning was brought down by experienced goalkeeper Tony Breeden after being set up by Kieren Donnelly. However, Jordan Ponticelli hit the resulting penalty kick close to the centre allowing Breeden to save just to his left.

Worse followed for Halesowen as the Tulips went up the other end and took a 12th minute lead after poor marking allowed TOMLINSON to steer a side-footed shot past goalkeeper Dan Platt at the far post following a set piece move.

Halesowen continued to create chances and Breeden saved an 18th minute header from home captain Ryan Wynter in front of goal and then kept out Reece Mitchell’s 20 yard shot two minutes later. Home goalkeeper Platt then did well to claw away Leshabela’s top corner shot in the 38th minute.

The Yeltz wasted another great opportunity when a 39th minute lightning box-to-box break left Spalding totally exposed at the back. Conor Tee raced forward and finally fed Donnelly but he made a poor first touch allowing Breeden to block and Manning fired the loose ball high over the bar.

Halesowen steadily built the pressure throughout the second half and substitute Nicholas Clayton-Phillips cut in from the right to fire into the side-netting after 56 minutes on his exciting debut. Ponticelli soon curled just wide twice with Spalding in no mood to let their precious lead slip.

But PONTICELLI finally equalised in the 77th minute with an excellent 20 yard strike into the far corner. With Halesowen going all out for a winner, Donnelly blazed over the bar in the 84th minute after good work from Clayton-Phillips and Donnelly’s 87th minute header was saved by Breeden from Mitchell’s cross.

Donnelly saved his best for last with a memorable winner four minutes into added time. Creative Josh Smile chipped a delightful ball forward and DONNELLY controlled and twisted to volley home superbly beyond Breeden.

Credit to Spalding for making it tough for us. Really closed us down quickly all game but as the second half wore on they sat deeper and you felt chances would come. It did in the end take a couple of good goals to break them as they hadn't let us have hardly any chances on goal. Massive pat on the back to the lads though for keeping the pressure on and grinding out a good 3 points. Happy days.
