Yeltz Brothers

Post by Laurel Lane Lamper » 08 Oct 2013, 08:25

Finally here's the full line-up from that FA Cup match against Farnborough in the Marske away topic.
16-Nov-91 FARNBOROUGH H 1,866 2 - 2 ROWE WHITTINGHAM EDWARDS SMITH VOWLES BRADLEY A HAZLEWOOD* FLYNN* BENNETT SHILVOCK HARRISON subs: :ATTWOOD GOODALL

The photo is of Sean Flynn's goal and the other 2 players are Malcolm Hazelwood (7) & Robert Shilvock. The replay, lost 0-4, is best forgotten.
Robert's brother Steve played for us in the very late 70's/early 80's and now runs the Franklins curtain shop in Peckingham Street in our town centre, his son is playing for Lye.

Anyone wish to name other Yeltz brothers, some much more obvious than others?

Chris and Steve Field. And didn't their dad play for us as well.

I hope he didn't suck as much as his sons.

Well, a bit harsh on Chris, and come to think of it, Steve wasn't as bad as Calvin Guest.

Probably worth adding that Steve Shilvock had a successful spell as manager of our reserves in the early 90's, winning their league, I think.

Gordon Field played something like 430 games, mostly at left back.

Steve Field was unfortunate in that he had the daunting task of succeeding Dean Spink and never looked like coming near to doing it. Dad Gordon was not the most cultured of full backs but unquestionably a 100% Yeltz man and was Manager for a while, I think early 70s.

I think Gordon had a couple of spells as caretaker manager but never did the role more permanently. He was manager of Cradley Town for a while as well - he does his gardening in a Cradley sweater

One pair of Yeltz brothers not to be forgotten is Harry Rudge and brother Jack. I'm assuming Harry played, it was always said he'd done everything at our club. Jack didn't play often for us, he passed away recently and the last time I spoke to him, at Merry Hill, he was still bemoaning Harry for dropping him from the 1st team at the slightest reason.

The Taylor brothers from the late 60s are an interesting pair. Bob was by far the most successful and after he'd made 129 starts for us he moved on to Tamworth, who had progressed to the newly formed and higher level Southern League. Brian Taylor was in our Reserves more than the 1st team. He entered the medical profession and Doc Jones tells me that when Wilfred Bouma was at the Villa not long ago, he was operated on by Brian in a Cardiff hospital.

What vintage were these pair? Only the slightest of recollections from me - was the full back small with fuzzy blond hair?

And Chas reminded me offline of Lee Collins (who was pretty good if memory serves) and his brother Ross who was kind to small animals, probably.

And the elephant in the room is best summed up by - Apps 1153, Goals 612.

Ross and Lee Collins, who I'm sure must have played together a fair few times.
