That was an entertaining first half. They have had some good chances as well.

I think their manager may already have won the season's award for the most expletives.

Southern League Premier Central – Saturday, 10th August 2024

Halesowen Town 2 Kettering Town 1

Halesowen took all three points in a hard fought battle with nine yellow cards on the opening day of the new season, writes DJ.

Yeltz manager Russ Penn reflected on the first day victory. “It was a typical first game of the season with two good organised sides - all I wanted to do was win the first home game. We moved the ball well, but they did as well. We got away with one and were resilient and defended well in the second half.”

Prior to kick-off, a one minute applause was held in the memory of long term Yeltz fan Ron Catton who passed away recently and also for Ryan Passey who lost his life seven years ago.

In a lively opening, Sidik Atcha brought down McKauley Manning on the right, but the resulting free-kick was turned away for an early home corner. Kettering looked energetic going forward and Kai Fifield did well down the left after 9 minutes but Remaye Campbell couldn’t covert his cross.

The Yeltz took an 11th minute lead with a composed finish from the penalty spot by new signing Reece FLANAGAN to open his account after Connor Johnson had brought down Conor Tee. Manning then went close after spotting visiting goalkeeper Jack Thompson off his line in the 12th minute but the Poppies continued to look dangerous as a 15th minute shot from the right by Isiah Noel-Williams brought a good save from home goalkeeper Dan Platt.

In end to end play, Kettering were cut open after 18 minutes but Manning’s effort in space in the box was saved by on-loan Derby goalkeeper Thompson for a corner. Halesowen’s Platt saved from his own captain Ryan Wynter after Tyree Wilson crossed in the 26th minute and a minute later Noel-Williams couldn’t connect properly in front of goal, allowing Platt to grab the ball. Wilson then blazed over the Yeltz bar in the 35th minute.

MANNING doubled Halesowen’s lead in the 40th minute when he deceived his defender and fired a left footer into the roof of the net following good work from Tee. Just before the interval Platt made a good save from Andi Thanoj’s free-kick from the edge of the area.

Just after the interval, former Poppies striker Adi Yussuf headed Manning’s 55th minute cross over the bar but it was Kettering continued to keep up the pressure in the second half. The Poppies reduced the deficit in the 69th minute when substitute Daniel JARVIS glanced home a header from Thanoj’s corner. The visitors went close again when Benjamin Hart struck narrowly wide after 80 minutes and Jarvis’s shot was easily saved by Platt four minutes later. But Halesowen held onto all three points as Platt beat the ball away from Devon Kelly-Evans in injury time and then defended two corners.
