Best league start ever?

Post by Poll » 07 Sep 2022, 16:29

In all the years I’ve been watching us, I can’t remember starting a league season this well and being points clear a few games in.

Even when we’ve won the league, my fading memory thinks we’ve always come from behind to take the title after a relatively slow start.

Anyone got any stats to back up my hunch?

I’ve been trying to find that out myself. I can’t remember 6 straight wins at the start of a league campaign in my time going back to 1982 … mind you my memory is a little suspect as the years advance😂

We had the same start last season, in fact we won the first 7, and then drew the 8th game at home to Carlton

Well that ended that quickly 😀

Funny how I completely discounted last season after the way we faded the 2nd half of the season!

To be fair it is easy to forget what a start we made last season, because we weren't actually THAT good. I think we may just remember this season a bit more.🤞

no surprise that it was Atherstone who spoilt this run:

17-Aug-85 RUSHALL A 2 1
20-Aug-85 HARRISONS A 1 0
22-Aug-85 MALVERN A 5 1
24-Aug-85 TIPTON H 1 0
26-Aug-85 TIVIDALE A 2 1
31-Aug-85 SHIFNAL H 5 0
21-Sep-85 ATHERSTONE H 2 2

;D We did have this exact same discussion last year

Couldn’t have asked for a better start though - not just our own games and performances, but our ante-post rivals have been dropping points too.

Just got to keep up this pressure and see how long we can keep this 100% record in tact.

In the run last year, we also beat Ilkeston and Sutton Coldfield in the FA Cup, so in a sense it was nine from nine. There is definitely more bottle in this squad than last year though...
