Very satisfying win yesterday. Didn’t think we played too bad the first half. They were difficult to play against and also the wind didn’t help matters. We had a number of chances but were lacking in the final third with the killer instinct.

Was in shock when they scored and felt like it was going to be one of those days but the substitutions with Yates and Holmes coming on made the difference and in the end we got a deserved score line which reflected the game.

Nice to see Lewis Wright back yesterday, thought he had a good game and whilst he didn’t score thought Montel had a decent game as well.

Big win for us especially with Corby dropping points again.

Roll on Halifax next week, going to be a great day!

BetVictor Southern League - Division One Central – Saturday, 1st February 2020

Halesowen Town 3 Barton Rovers 1

Super substitutes Luke Yates and Jack Holmes struck three late goals as patient Halesowen came from behind at a gusty Grove, writes DJ.

Halesowen were on top for the first hour but were unable to break down the stubborn Barton defence and manager Paul Smith admitted the win was again far from pretty, but results were all that mattered at this stage and re-iterated it was the strong effort from the whole squad that found a way to overcome the frustration.

Montel Gibson controlled the ball to strike at visiting goalkeeper Niall Cooper in the 6th minute and Gibson set up Robbie Bunn to curl wide two minutes later. Jordan Piggott headed at Cooper in the 11th minute and Robbie Bunn’s shot from the edge of the area was then held by busy Cooper. As the Yeltz continued to dominate, Gibson blazed high in the 28th minute and a 30th minute cross-shot from Rob Evans was held well by Cooper. Before the interval Ash Sammons was just unable to keep his shot down after Piggott headed on a 34th minute corner and Jamie Molyneux’s 42nd minute shot was then turned away for the first of three quick-fire corners.

The start of the second half continued in the same manner with plenty of congested play on the edge of the Barton area. Molyneux cut in from the left to win a 48th minute corner from a deflected shot and Sammons fired over the bar again from 30 yards in the 51st minute. Ahmed Ali played a good 54th minute ball to Isai Marselia but he was driven wide by Cooper to hit the side-netting. As frustration grew, Molyneux was off target again into the side netting after 57 minutes.

But Barton picked Halesowen’s pockets to snatch a shock 60th minute lead when Jay Palmer crossed for Dean Dummett to head back at the far post and unmarked Connor FURLONG slammed into the roof of the net from five yards.

Paul Smith responded with a triple substitution and substitute Yates cut the ball back for Robbie Bunn in the 65th minute but another chance went to waste in the area before the Yeltz hit three goals in a dramatic climax.

Halesowen levelled in the 69th minute when Ali headed back Robbie Bunn’s corner superbly at the far post, allowing YATES to squeeze between two defenders and head home from close range.

Ali then flicked the ball over the visiting defence but Cooper grabbed from Gibson and livewire substitute Holmes struck past the post from 20 yards after 78 minutes. Holmes then crossed for Gibson in the 83rd minute, only for Lewis Thomas to clear off the line and Gibson’s 84th minute volley was turned away for a corner by Cooper.

The Yeltz went ahead when Ali met another Robbie Bunn corner in the 84th minute and YATES bundled past Cooper at the second attempt.

Barton had a good late chance when Victor Osobu’s dangerous cross just evaded Keanu Williams at the far post in the third minute of injury time. But HOLMES skipped past three defenders in the seventh minute of injury time and drilled his low shot from the right into the far corner of Barton’s net to make it 3-1 to the Yeltz.

We were the better team throughout but had to dig it out after they went ahead. The subs definitely made a difference as well and Holmes's goal was very well taken.

Bowen is a good player but his behaviour sometimes is not very 'classy'. Taunting their keeper after the second goal and their number 7 after the third was unnecessary and didn't look very good, irrespective of what might have gone on during the game.
Couldn't care to be honest. After all their timewasting, bleating and getting away with everything due to an awful ref, he was just giving them some back. May not be classy but sometimes football can just wind you up that way.
After coming from 1 down to score three late goals to beat a side that had come with the sole intention of frustrating us, I think that the adrenalin rush that Jamie Bowen felt was entirely predictable!.
Their 'keeper took every opportunity to timewaste after they went ahead and, in the end, he and his team got what they deserved - zilch!
This was a side that, way back in September when we played them away, tried to get the game abandoned by walking off the pitch! Only by our 'on the ball' secretary John Cooper phoning the League Secretary to get clarification of the rules did we get the game concluded - with us winning!

What goes around comes around.
Full marks JB for showing how much the win meant to you and the lads! 👍👏
