Agree with the sentiments posted so far and think they are all fair and reasonable.
Funny though- there have been complaints about the direct tactics for a while, however stick in a creative centre mid and advance the wingers and everyone seems to have decided that we actually need a target man to win the long balls.
Anyway, this is all overlooking the real talking point from Tuesday night which was Sir John's suntan. Who's he been scouting in the Caribbean? Or has he just been coating himself with Ronseal in preparation for the winter? Fair to say it was stunning.

Nobody has advocated playing the long ball. But if the long ball 'tactic' which has been the norm for the four years he has been here is going to continue, then surely it makes sense to have a target man to help Anderson out? Otherwise Anderson has got to win the long ball, and then create his own chances without much support which is generally what happens

You would certainly think that logic would dictate if you were to insist on a long ball style then a target man who can win such long balls, and a midfield that pushes beyond said target man to win any flick ons / second balls, would be essential in making the 'tactic' effective.

It would be interesting to understand the thinking behind our use of the 'long ball' tactic.
For me, the tactic almost acceptable for a team of players who are incapable of passing to one another, in order to stop another team playing football. Fortunately for us, this current crop of players aren't as desperate as this tactic makes them look.
