Also, why do the players get applause for getting themselves sent off and then the referee gets abuse for making correct decisions?
Because some folk are just stupid.

A 0-0 draw against Mickleover is hardly the stuff of Boxing Day dreams but it was quite a spicy game, and there was a good noise and lots of support from The Shed, which always adds some excitement.

However, today’s “rocks for brains” award is duly handed over to Brad Lewis (who found himself in a some sort of flamboyant midfield playmaker role today) for collecting two of the most blatant and mind-numbingly stupid yellow cards. The culminating red killed the game and it was always going to be backs to the walls (on the pitch) once Lawton had followed him into the showers.

Credit to the remaining nine for not getting sent off and holding out for a point. Dan Platt once again showed his fine shot stopping ability and for the second Boxing Day running showed why he is one of the best in the league. One final plea to John Hill- please find room for Jordan Goddard in this team. If he’s fit, start him!

Halesowen Town 0 Mickleover Sports 0

Halesowen were reduced to nine men but held on to claim a point in a disappointing Boxing Day stalemate against out of form Mickleover.

John McAtee’s 6th minute attempt was blocked for a corner and a second corner followed in the 10th minute after Jack Kelly’s cross was blocked. Mickleover featured for the first time in the 14th minute when Andy Dales beat Enoch Ekongu to cross from the left but Evan Garnett clipped the ball at goalkeeper Dan Platt at the near post.

Ben Turner lost possession for the visitors in the 28th minute allowing McAtee to break forward again, but the move ended as Matthew Barnes-Homer shot at Lewis King. The clearest chance of the first-half arrived in the 32nd minute when Andy Dales was put through on the home goal but Platt made a fine blocking save. In further pressure from the visitors, Garnett hit high over the bar after 34 minutes and two minutes later the ball was laid off for Bradley Grayson to fire wide.

Before the interval Halesowen’s McAtee fired a long free-kick at goalkeeper Lewis King and Bradley Lewis drove wide with a good sight of goal after the ball was worked across from the left. McAtee was then twice crowded out in second half injury time.

The Yeltz failed to trouble Mickleover goalkeeper King in a scrappy second period with the visitors going closest to breaking the deadlock. Home goalkeeper Dan Platt made a good 56th minute save to deny Garnett and captain Jake Scott could only blaze the rebound high over the bar. Platt made another fine save to keep out John McGrath’s 20 yard low shot in the 58th minute and a header from Pablo Mills was flicked over his own bar by Enoch Ekongu five minutes later. Platt was the saviour once again from the resulting corner by producing a fine reflex save to keep out Alex Morris’s header.

Halesowen were reduced to ten men in the 71st minute when Lewis picked up a second yellow card but the visitors failed to take advantage as Garnett planted another great chance over the bar after playing a one-two with Clinton Morrison. Matters worsened for Halesowen when captain Ivor Lawton was shown a straight red card for an 82nd minute midfield foul but the battling nine men kept out the visitors to claim a point at the end of a fairly forgettable Bank Holiday contest.

Halesowen News report says straight red seemed harsh and twitter described it as a pretty innocuous challenge. Also referee was probably getting abuse for not sending off the number 5 or booking the forward for diving.

It’d be interesting to hear why John Hill played a centre back / left back as a central midfielder above Goddard - a recognised and quality Central midfielder.

I’d describe it as a “flying challenge”, as he was mid-air when he reached the player. I only doubted whether the ref would have the nerve to show a second red card within minutes, but no complaints when he did.

The incident with the Mickleover No. 5 that followed was mostly handbags. Again, it was probably only a yellow, but you’d hope that the ref might feel obliged to start to even up the numbers.

So, to be fair, the ref got all the big decisions right (and credit where it’s due). It was our own clownish ill-discipline that meant we had to cling on for a point.

One for our wonderful stats boffins....

When was the last time we had two players sent off in the same game? I can’t recall it happening before, certainly not under John Hill. ???

Surprised to see the attendance given as 402. Although poor for a boxing day it's considerably higher than it looked.

Does the attendance recorded include season ticket holders whether they are there or not?
