Halesowen Town 0 Sutton Coldfield Town 2

Hapless Halesowen slumped to a fifth defeat in six games after conceding an early goal at the start of each half.

Zimbabwean Cecil Nyoni, recently of Alfreton Town, made his debut but couldn’t prevent Halesowen’s performance being in complete contrast to the glorious Bank Holiday weather. Once again, the Yeltz made a dreadful start to the game when Aaron BIRCH exposed their defensive frailty by smashing past goalkeeper Dan Platt straight down the centre in the 2nd minute. Nathaniel Kelly’s header was then cleared off the line from Sutton’s 6th minute corner.

As the game briefly became more even midway through the first half, Roland Agbor forced a 16th minute corner for the Yeltz and Luke Shearer’s 20th minute effort was hacked clear by the Royals’ defence. Head-bandaged Asa Charlton then headed just wide after Lee Chilton floated over a 22nd minute free-kick before Malachi Lovell-Moore’s low shot was turned away for a 34th minute Sutton Coldfield corner.

Matters worsened for Halesowen when club captain Danny Bragoli was shown a straight red card - for which there could be no cause for any complaint or dispute - after a reckless challenge on James Beresford right on the stroke of half-time.

Substitute Jack Kelly’s low shot was held well by little-troubled visiting goalkeeper Mason Springthorpe at the start of the second period. But the Royals soon wrapped up the game with a second goal against the ten men in the 53rd minute when substitute Niall Flint’s shot was parried away by Platt and LAVELL-MOORE was on hand to slot the loose ball home under no challenge. Zac Martin almost added a third goal but his turn on the shot hit the underside of the bar after 70 minutes and Platt saved further embarrassment with a good 75th minute block from Gurjit Singh after Kyle Morrison gave the ball away cheaply.

Agbor’s header was cleared with four minutes remaining and although both he and Shearer battled bravely up front for the Yeltz, the hosts lacked the quality and confidence to cause any real danger all afternoon in a worryingly, poor display.

We must all still have some optimism! On Poll's excellent fantasy island prediction game not one of us went for a Sutton win. Only one person scored any points at all. John Austin amassed 2 whole points for predicting Sutton to score 2. So 2 points earned out of a possible 160. After that though I will wager that should Basford win on saturday far more of us will have put some points on the scoreboard. ::)
