Great result, hard fought game , by both teams, not a great deal between both sides, every player deserved credit for their efforts with Manning being the pick of the bunch….some great runs attacking and got back to do his share of defending….well done to all, looking forward to a tough game on Saturday

For all the grumbling, moaning and negativity (I'm guilty, I know!), I for one am happy with our start. Other than the FA Cup exit it has been very solid.

I didn't go last night so I can't comment on the performance, but that is a very, very good 3 points.

Is it still too early to question the 'careful what you wish for' post from Yeltz Baby?

Great result last night - superb support too, judging by the highlights.

Fair play to Solly - I half expected him to throw a few in his own net but a brilliant clean sheet, and he really does seem invested in the club. I almost feel bad for several years of shouting nasty words at him.

The league hasn't really got going yet, but we're up there and the cup exit might be a blessing as we could steal a bit of momentum. That said, I think quite a few of the other teams in our league got knocked out, so maybe they've all got the same plan as us.

On an aside, I do really like the fact we've got a tight squad this year and the lineup is mostly consistent. Form and reliability will decide this division, so to get a settled squad early doors will make a big difference (IMO).

Thanks to our pro active secretary who was on the case straight after the Redditch game we get the chance to steal momentum on Saturday as the only other game is Stamford at Sudbury

This was Paul's downfall in his time here, for me. I'm a huge believer in playing the same XI every game wherever possible.

And no, I'm not having a sly dig at Smith there. Well, it's not my intention.

I'll have to buy JC a pint then and thank him for getting me away from the family and having to speak to them.

It's early days under Penn and who knows how this season might pan out but I'd rather have too few players in the squad than too many. Think of players like Rhys Hilton who were signed and didn't get a look in. I wonder what he's up to now?? ??? :)

It gets hard as the season goes on - injuries, suspensions, boggy pitches and tired legs, long away journeys, fixture pile-ups, and of course a multitude of other things that us fans don't even see - but always good to get your strongest XI and system nailed down.

Southern League Premier Central – Tuesday, 10th September 2024

Banbury United 0 Halesowen Town 1

Substitute Ryan Boothe’s late winner moved Halesowen up to third place in their best performance of the season to date, writes DJ.

40 year old goalkeeper Lewis Solly took charge of the goalkeeping gloves after a stomach illness ended goalkeeper Dan Platt’s long consecutive run of appearances and Solly used all of his experience to orchestrate an excellent Yeltz clean sheet.

McKauley Manning dragged an early shot wide and went close again in the 25th minute after skipping through to see his shot tipped away by home goalkeeper Jack Harding. Halesowen continued to keep up the pressure earning four corners in quick succession midway through the half but the Banbury defence, having only conceded three goals all season, held firm. Kieren Donnelly then latched onto a 40th minute through ball, though Harding made a comfortable save.

The tight pattern of play continued after the interval, although Enock Lusiama forced Harding into a near post save down the left on the hour mark.

Despite their neat football, the Puritans were restricted to just a few clear-cut chances again in the second half as Tommy Cartwright headed a 55th minute corner wide and Harry Reilly found George Ball to hit a good chance over the bar after 67 minutes. But Solly remained relatively untroubled although Ramello Mitchell’s 73rd minute free-kick fell just past Solly’s post and Ball’s 76th minute cross sailed through the Yeltz penalty area into safety.

Halesowen found their 81st minute winner after Jak Hickman’s left wing corner wasn’t fully cleared and the ball came back out invitingly for Ryan Wynter to fire a low 20 yard shot that was heading just left of goal until the ball was directed home by BOOTHE’s quick reaction.

Banbury made a triple 86th minute substitution in an attempt to find an equaliser but Halesowen stood strong and held firm to see out six minutes of added time.

Banbury United: Jack Harding; Tai Fleming, Gedeon Okito (Matthew Ireland 86), Gift Mussa, Yaw Ofosu (c), Tommy Cartwright (Prince Henry 86), Harry Reilly, Archie Hollyhead (Claudio Franca Dias 73), Ramello Mitchell (Harvey Westwood 73), Adriel George (Charlie Donaldson 86), George Ball.
