Anthony Hughes

There will be a minute's applause before the game this Saturday 27th in remembrance of Southern League Chairman Anthony Hughes, who passed away recently. It's a name probably not known to many, though longer-term Yeltz fans may remember him from our encounters with Merthyr from the mid-80s to 2009, where he was a devoted fan of his home town club in the family tradition. He went on to be a devoted club servant there as club secretary, director and board member, as well as filing newspaper match reports.

In April 2009, I recall they organised a tribute at Penydarren Park to Colin Brookes, who was stepping down as our General Manager in the last game of the season (Merthyr also played in a black and green replica kit of their last Football League game in 1930 that day). Anthony stuck with Merthyr through financial troubles and a previous visit was also unusual as both teams were in administration at the time. Yeltz fans also had a good relationship with Merthyr under his time there with supporters games held against them before the main game.

Incidentally, in the pre mobile phone era, Penydarren Park was surely one of the most difficult grounds to find the way in as a visiting fan!
