Plus ones

Does anybody know how the 'bring a friend' ticket is working this season? Anybody who purchased a season ticket will be aware that there is one spare ticket that can be used by a friend at any game of the season. If all the games are sold out (as I suspect they will be) will the club have to be notified in advance?
If everybody saved theirs for the big promotion game
there would be 620 people there!
