A bit of Warrington history

Post by DJ » 22 Oct 2016, 11:14

Forgive the indulgence, but for those of us of a certain age the visit of Warrington can only cast our minds back to a very windy Grove in March 1986 for one of the last matches on the old sloping surface. Never-say-die Warrington (and Gordon Hunter in particular) made it an incredibly tense FA Vase Semi-Final 2nd leg ending 3-3 after extra time, leading to one of the most epic games in memory in the replay at Bucks Head the following Tuesday (both of these Warrington games were recorded on video, so are out there somewhere). Here's my summary of the Warrington replay and what happened next...

I don't think that 6-3 game will ever be beaten for excitement. A long time ago now!

The penalty was the only bit of the game that sticks in my mind. I remember thinking the keeper had it covered and went the rightway. I have it in my head it was Alan Pemberton in goal though.
