It Were The Best!

So, grounds we've really enjoyed for reasons of aesthetics, pubs, "incidents", etc.

I'll start with Matlock, a great view and we seem to score four every time we play them.

Bashley. Because it's the only time I've ever been brilliant at football in the 26-a-side post match friendly............1993........long since retired :D

I thought Nene Park where we played Rushden & Diamonds was an excellent ground and a far cry from the bleak ground in Rushden before the amalganation. York Road , Boston could also be described as something a bit special to us, considering the state of The Grove at the time, when we first played there in the mid sixties.

That place where we beat Southall & Fleetwood. Or should this be on the previous thread?

I admire how Kidderminster have developed their ground from having a track around it when I first went in the 60s to the standard it is now, which was done mostly while still non-league.
I always enjoyed visits to Merthyr , preceded by the scenic M50 route, and this is influenced by our unforgettable first Southern League match there.

Workington's ground is a proper old traditional ground, you can almost smell the history of it. I much prefer those grounds to the newer kind of grounds of Stamford. I enjoyed both visits to Blyth last season too, nice people and another traditional ground. Nantwich was cracking too, found a brilliant pub that did loads of ales and we sat upstairs in our own lounge.

So far this season, Colwyn Bay was great, went up the night before had a night in the town, decent pubs and friendly people with a cracking cafe that couldn't feed us enough breakfast for £5. Not sure how they compare to some of the clubs you lot visited in the southern league days but I've found the northern away days cracking.

Salisbury

Old ground in the Park - Slade On Tour, Wyndham Arms, Haunch of Venison (large potatos), Father Brendan giving Andy P the last rites in the Bulls Head

New Ground on the Plain - looks of concern from Paddy Ashdowns (???) Security team when we emerged from the pub in the square, and incredibly childish behaviour on the way to ground on the bus when we witnessed a couple of pigs 'making bacon'

Now, was Jimmy the hoover at an old ground match or a new ground match ?? Westy??

I always like going to Chippenham but I can't think of a sensible reason why!

Love this topic because everyone will have favourites for a massive range of different reasons. Look forward to reading them all!
As for simply 'best' ground, agree with Ken, Rushden, Boston and a couple of others in Dorchester and Kiddy. For some strange reason I liked Gravesend & Northfleets big old ground as well, maybe because we scored 8 on one occasion. Don't suppose we came 'claim' Watford can we?

Like HH I love 'the Bash' as well. We used to stay in the New Forest for the weekend and ust loved the local pubs and the ground in the middle of fields. Wonderful.
