Style of play!

Post by RaidenYeltz » 28 Aug 2013, 11:34

Seen a few comments commenting on how direct we seem to be playing. Especially in regards to the two home games this season. I know the season is very young at the moment, and I have only seen the Causeway friendly and the first home game against Sutton but I do agree this is the case, I wouldn't go as far as to say this disappoints me but when I've seen us play the ball on the ground and pass it, I think we do it well and creat good chances.

The causeway friendly, I found that first half we approached it directly but in the second half we seemed to play the ball on the ground much more and in my opinion we looked better for it and seemed to create more chances. The Sutton game was much the same.

I suppose one reason for the more direct approach will be a case of having Ben Haseley and when fully fit and back, Kyle Brady as a front two. I can certainly see why you'd want to play direct and get the ball to them quickly.

In essence I'd like to the see the ball on the floor as much as possible but can see and understand the possible reasons for going direct.

Also while I'm posting I find it a strange, but mostly positive start. 2 home defeats, 2 good and big away wins. Maybe teams sit back and defend more at the Grove in fear of Ben Haseley, we're finding it hard at home (only 2 games I know) but we seem to scoring at free will away from home. Saying that, the Sutton home game we didn't deserve to lose. Should be looking at 7 points rather than 6 but a solid start to the season and the pre-season good feeling and hope is certainly still here.

I was on holiday for the Sutton game but saw all of the pre season games bar Leamington, and we didn't play that direct. In fact we played some nice football at times. I think on Saturday it seemed worse after Meach got sent off. The gaffer decided to keep 4 in midfield and 2 up top which meant our outlet ball (to the full backs) had gone due to having a back 3.
I do think whoever plays up with Ben needs to play closer to him though, as this would help some of the longer passes seem more like passes than hoofs! Whilst Tom Tonks is a real grafter and is the energy of the team so far this season he does a lot of Macca's running, we don't always have the midfield players coming to the ball to collect it off the back 4

We are very much capable of playing some very good stuff, don't get me wrong.
