Alternate Reality

Post by YeltzDoc » 21 May 2013, 06:32

When I was a stoodent back in the early 90s, I'm ashamed to say that we went out on the pop quite a bit.
And, when the pubs closed, given that it was before all night opening, we'd pile back to my mate's flat in The Lye (ooh, the glamour) for a few more scoops.
Without fail, we'd put some videos on, typical stuff - Bill Hicks, Danny Baker's Football vids etc, but our absolute favourite was a documentary about Karen Brady's reign as Chief Exec at the Blues.
Lots of amusing characters in it - Mrs Peschisido herself, Barry Fry, those pornographers that owned the club and Tom Ross ("Scott Hiley, promising young player...").
But, the undoubted star of the show was a little baldy Bluenose taxi driver whose lines have become legend in our social group, "Who d'you recognise", "But then again, I think they're very jealous of Karen", "Haha, that's it."
Spin forward twenty years and I'm aimlessly tooling about on Twitter waiting for a plane at LBA and I can see that the Yeltz have appointed a new Commercial Manager.
"Good stuff", thinks I. Another sign that we're going in the right direction.
Paul Collins - name half rings a bell, but it's a common name and it's early. Wonder if he's the tall bloke or the little baldy bloke. @gabbycabby. Blues fan. Something stirs in the back of my brain. Tick, tick, tick.
Eh? Bolt awake now and a trickle of sweat runs down my back. Closer look at the picture. It isn't, is it?
It only bloody is.
Sweating and shaking now. Honestly more of a shock to the system than Big Ron signing on under he who shall not be mentioned.
Fortunately, free scotch in the lounge.
Absolutely gobsmacked.

Welcome Paul. Already a legend.

and, perhaps, with origins and association from the same era of yours Doc, there very sadly is no bright golden haze this morning:
