I thought Chris and Steve were brothers. Steve had the unenviable task of following Dean Spink for the 1989/90 season and Chris played 1994/95. Did Gordon's father play pre-WWII?

Chris and Steve were brothers. Steve used to get on the same bus as me sometimes. I'm available for autographs and a book tour to promote this, obviously.

Steve was one of two who were to be the next Deano as I remember it.
Usual prize for the other name?

Chris and Steve are indeed brothers. It's actually a slightly trick question, Gordon's father actually only played one game I believe, shortly after WW2. He injured his ankle and never played again (facts that Gordon only told me recently)

Here won't be a fourth generation though, as all of Gordon's grandchildren are girls

Slightly addled memories with age, but there was one bloke that we paid a Grand for, who came in (from Sutton?) and was pretty hopeless and another who only played with us for a bit as he shared a lift with Spinksy and couldn't make it for long after he left - he was alright as I remember.

The one that I was thinking of was described by Nasty Derek as, "worth more than Deano" and was another hopeless effort that I'm still waiting for someone to gues s (and tell me I'm 5 years out).
(Not Alan Attwood).

Gordon's says that his name was Fred and that he (Gordon) went to the only match his dad played at the age of 5 or 6. Fred had just been demobbed, so the timing with Gordon's age fits. He injured his ankle partway through the match and went off injured. As I said earlier, never played again, although not sure if the injury was the cause of that or just down to practical circumstances.

That's what Gordon said to me a while ago and repeated tonight - that his Dad only played one match. The timing is about right, and Field isn't a particularly common name. On that basis I reckon Fred and our Mr Field are probably one and the same.
