On this day ......
On this day 50 years ago, Wednesday 14th April 1965, Alec Wood secured himself a place in our history when he scored 5 goals in a 7-0 drubbing of Tamworth at The Grove.
The Yeltz were a West Midlands League side to fear in the mid-60s and finished in 2nd place in the 1964/65 season, behind Kidderminster (the league table is shown in the photo attached), after a run of 8 wins and 1 draw at the end. As well as the Tamworth result, there were also high-scoring wins over Lye (8-1), Darlaston (7-0) and Sutton (6-0).
Alec Wood finished with a total of 17 league goals while David Eades notched 39 in 33 games. Dave Culwick, Mel Adams and Bobby Anderson topped the appearances list.
Our line-up for the Tamworth match was: Bob Deaves, Alan Parsons, Gordon Field, Stan Purvis, Dave Culwick, Mel Adams, Sammy Roberts, Tommy Bryceland, David Eades, Alec Wood, Bobby Anderson.
Alec is still seen around Halesowen. #uptheyeltz

Re: On this day ......
Thought that might please you Andy. Alec Wood was a very good player, what we used to describe as a schemer. He was Scottish and 'slightly' volatile . On this occasion he had either come back from or was about to serve a ban of seven week , cant remember which, and he took it out on Tamworth with his five goals. The match I remember was an evening kick off, way before we had floodlights. He dribbled his way through their defence, headed at least one and also scored with a shot from the edge of the are,as I recall. He returned to Scotland, Glasgow, for a holiday, and was offered £4. a game to turn out for the amateurs of Queens Park who played at Hampden. He was a firm favourite with the Halesowen faithful, but the tragic thing is, in this day and age , he probably woud n't get in our team today.

Can't believe nobody put on yesterday what happened 30 years ago! Yesterday was exactly thirty years since we won the Vase for the first time...

Re: On this day ......
In amidst the euphoria at Wembley yesterday it did cross my mind that 30 years ago next Monday we beat Fleetwood and I had a discussion with my family this morning about it, including trying to decide if it started to snow as our coach was on the return motorway journey.

LLL , it certainly snowed after one of our Wembley finals, and I'm pretty certain it was the Fleetwood match. I drove a twelve seated minibus down filled with Hawne Rangers players and guests. I rember hitting the North Circular (406) and was caught in a blizzard. Fortuneatly by the time we reached the M1 the snow had stopped.
