125 years ago.......football as we know it started

....and it was the Villa to blame

It was 125 years ago on Saturday, on 2 March 1888, that William McGregor, then the president of Aston Villa, wrote a letter to a small group of other football clubs, floating the idea that they should organise a league

Mind you, if we believe the popular press, football started in 1992 :'(

My point being that it was the point at which league competions started. Previously there was the FA Challenge Cup, County Senior Cups and friendly matches by mutual arrangement between clubs.

When he gets online Zeezze will probably tell us more. He was at the original meeting I believe
